Nigeria - The day-to-day dispensation of duties often takes a hard toll on the lives of medical professionals. Several brave Nigerian doctors have battled adverse situations to be able to dispense their duties rightfully. Healthfolk.net, through its writing competition invites doctors to share and give an account of the risks that they or their colleagues have experienced in the course of healthcare delivery. The contest is scheduled to last for two months and healthfolk.net has dedicated a 30-day window for submission of entries.

The doctors have been given a free hand to write on the experiences which they encounter in their workplace, particularly on the ones that pertain to the potential hazards in the profession and the effects of them on daily practice and life of these doctors. The writing contest is however not restricted to the physical manifestations of hazards - entries that are centered on emotional aspects are invited as well.

Healthfolk.net has kept the rules for submitting entries simple. As it would be obvious, all entries are to be submitted in English. The site however gives the liberty to choose the mode of narrative among between poetry and prose. Writers may not use more than 2000 words to write on the hazards in medical practice. There is however, the provision to include images in the blog.

The contest is open to all practitioners in the medical field. All that the doctor needs to do is register on the site (for free) and post their entries. The entries can be submitted up to November 30, 2014. After registering on healthfolk.net, entrants need to click on the ‘join contest’ option to participate in the competition.

The contest organizer recently spoke to the media. He said: “The purpose of the HealthFolk 2014 Writing Competition is pretty clearly laid out. We want people to know about the hazards that Nigerian doctors have to face while dispensing their duties with conviction. We hope to find some really good reads through the entries in the days to come.”

The writing contest has begun on October 1 and voting lines will commence from November 1, 2014.
