A lady with courage, dynamism, and lady of immense steel and character, Kiran Bedi ex-IPS Officer and now a social activist. In a country where women are still not considered equal, Kiran Bedi joined Indian Police Service in July 1972, being the first Indian lady to be a Police Officer. Born in Punjab, Kiran Bedi started her career as a lecturer of Political Science and further becoming the first Indian lady police officer. Bedi held the post of Director General at the Bureau of Police Research and Development before she voluntarily retired from the IPS in December 2007. She was also incharge of the most dreaded jail in India, Tihar. She was responsible for changing the face and functioning of the prison. In May 2005, she was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Law in recognition of her “humanitarian approach to prison reforms and policing”. She took another step in her relentless contribution towards society, by initiating two Non Government Organizations: the Navjyoti Delhi Police Foundation for welfare and preventative policing in late eighties which was later renamed as the Navjyoti India Foundation in 2007, and the India Vision Foundation for prison reformation, drug abuse prevention and child welfare in 1994. Among many awards, she was befittingly awarded by President’s Gallantry Award in the early stage of her career and later Ramon Magsaysay award in 1994 for Government service. Her participation in the Lokpal movement proved her vision and focus on nation’s development and making it a corruption free nation.

Defying the myths and the society norms about women, Kiran Bedi made a difference to the society and subsequently the nation. A name that equals courage, valor and bravery is an inspiration for the young generation, especially women.
