Milka Singh is a living legend, known as one of most outstanding personality in Indian athletics for his former Indian track and field sprinter. Nicknamed as the ‘Flying Sikh’ by the president of Pakistan, his inspiring story leaves a mark on every individual. Born 1935, in Govindpura a small village in Punjab, Milkha Singh was one of the 15 siblings. At a tender age he was orphaned, his both parents and siblings were brutally killed during the partition. Milkha Singh was introduced to the sport while serving the Indian Army. He is the only Indian male athlete to win an individual athletics gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. He has represented India in 1956 in the Summer Olympics in Melbourne and four years later in 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. In the year 1957, Singh established national record in 400 meters race of 47.5 secs. In Third Asiad, which was held at Japan’s capital Tokyo, Milkha Singh created two records in 200 and 400 meters races. Milkha Singh has been awarded with the highest civilian award Padma Shri and also Arjuna Award for his outstanding sports achievements.
