The City of Grand Prairie, Texas, hosts the Hatch Chile Festival at downtown Farmer‘s Market on August 18
Grand Prairie, TX The Grand Prairie, Texas, Farmers Market in downtown Market Square will host its annual Hatch Chile Festival on Saturday, August 18, 2012, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The guest of honor is the Hatch chile, a variety of the genus Capsicum, grown in the Hatch Valley, an area of New Mexico stretching north and south along the Rio Grande River. The pepper is harvested during late July and August after a growing season of only six weeks. Some say the Hatch chile is the best pepper grown in the U.S. With flavors ranging from mild to medium, the uncooked chiles are best roasted, then peeled, and seeded. The versatile pepper is often used in chili relleno dishes, but imaginative cooks have spiced up crab cakes, soups, and even crème brulee with the humble Hatch.
The Grand Prairie Farmers Market is open Saturdays, March through December, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. On any given Saturday, market-goers might find Texas bottled wines, honey from Texas honey bees, Texas grass-fed beef, and homegrown lavender body products, not to mention fresh fruits and vegetables, and homemade pies, cookies, candy, and breads. Special events throughout the season include cooking demonstrations, festivals, and a holiday market.
Home to the Farmers Market is Market Square, a half-acre park that opened in 2009 to provide space for outdoor entertainment. A “pot-belly” water tower sits on the corner near where a similar tower stood in the early 1900s and acts as a directional beacon for Market Square. The architecture is reminiscent of a red barn with a corrugated tin roof, evoking ties with the city‘s history, which dates from 1846 when Micajah and Elizabeth Goodwin arrived with their nine children to take advantage of the Republic of Texas land grants offered to settlers.
Market Square is located at 120 W. Main Street on the corners of NW 2nd and W. Main streets in downtown Grand Prairie. Public parking is available in downtown parking lots and along Main Street and Center Street. For information, call the Farmers Market at 972.237.4599.
