19, September 2014: Already a very popular location for a luxury barge holidays with top companies like European Waterways, France’s Dordogne region may benefit even further from an endorsement by British newspaper the Daily Mirror. In a recent write-up on the travel section of their website, one of the paper’s travel writers extolled the region’s many wonders, and claimed exploring the waterways was one of the best ways to enjoy them.

During her visit to the region earlier this year, the writer declared herself impressed with the wealth of natural landscapes and sights offered, including the quaint countryside villages and the many touristic sites.

Among these tourist sites and, according to the feature’s author, perhaps the most impressive, is the Gouffre de Padirac, an underground structure accessed through a seemingly never-ending stairwell or — for those less physically fit — an elevator. Part of this cave can only be navigated by boat, with the glide past stalagmites, stalactites and other rock formations constituting an experience well worth having, according to the Mirror’s travel writer.

Also worth a visit, claims the writer, is the small country town of Sarlat-La-Caneda, built around a 14th century Benedictine abbey, which boasts an impressive cathedral of great interest to amateur historians. Specialty restaurants dotted around the town square also allow tourists to purchase some of the region’s best-known delicacies – in particular foie gras and truffles. These and other attractions make this village very popular with both tourists and visitors from elsewhere in France, particularly from Paris.

Experts from top barging company European Waterways add weight to the writer’s claims regarding the attraction of the Dordogne region. They say the area is well renowned for its excellent cycling opportunities, an activity that often goes hand in hand with the concept of barge holidays.

Any tourists seeking to explore this delightful area on a barge holiday should contact the experts at top specialist companies, like European Waterways. France is one of the most popular countries for this type of break, and it seems the Dordogne is one top region to add to the wish list.
