Orlando, FL— February 18, 2015 — Dysmenorrhea is one of the reproductive health problems suffered by many women. Period cramps also happen together with other symptoms such as nausea, headaches, and fatigue. While the use of pain relief drugs are still practiced nowadays, the popularity of natural alternatives is increasing.

Fish oil is among the best natural alternatives for dysmenorrhea. Painful cramps take place before or during a woman’s menstrual period. The symptoms of menstrual cramps are aching pain or pressure in the abdomen, pain in the inner thighs, lower back, or in the hips, upset stomach, severe cramps, and loose stools.

The uterus is a muscle and when it contracts, it can result in menstrual cramps. Contractions often take place throughout a menstrual cycle of a woman. There are a number of pain relievers used by sufferers to find relief from pain and other symptoms. However, the use of fish oil is also believed to be helpful.

In a small Danish study, the researchers monitored 78 women who suffered from menstrual pain. They were given four oils, namely fish oil, seal oil, fish oil plus vitamin B-12, and placebo of regular oil. It was found that the women who took the first three oils reported fewer symptoms and reduction in pain than those who took the regular oil. It was also found that the positive effects of fish oil lasted for at least three months.

Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are healthy fats. There are many therapeutic benefits associated with the use of fish oil, particular for cardiovascular health. Today, fish oil supplements are widely available in the market.

According to Ernst Schaefer, M.D., omega-3 fats have the potential to reduce inflammation. Since it is apparent that inflammation takes place during menstruation, it can take part as a useful form of therapy. Schaefer is the chief of the lipid metabolism laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research center on Aging at Tufts University.

Vitamin B-12 is also an excellent combination for omega-3 fats. The Danish researchers also added that the participants had a diet that was low in omega-3 fats. Thus, they suggest that the women may be more susceptible to cramps due to the low levels of omega-3 fats in their diet.  Omega-3 fats decrease inflammation and omega-6 increases it.

Fish oil supplements are available nowadays, and they are very popular among individuals who want to improve their overall health. They are also used by those who suffer from cardiovascular ailments and arthritic conditions (amazon.com/Omega-Fish-Oil-Supplement-Softgels/dp/B00O8NS20K/).
