Factrichi 100 Varsh showcases the life of “tragedy king†Dilip Kumar only on IBN-Lokmat
Pune, 17th June 2012: It is often said that the brilliance of a genius actor, lies in his / her simplicity of its execution. This is what makes an actor greater than the next one. Dilip Kumar is said to be one of such actors. His performances have been regarded as the epitome of emotions in Indian cinema. The Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke awardee whose life is no less than a Bollywood movie itself will be showcased in Factrichi 100 varsh on Sunday, 17th June at 1:30 pm and 9:30 pm only on IBN-Lokmat.
Dilip Kumar was born as Muhammad Yusuf Khan in Peshwar, British India (now Pakistan) in December 1922. His father was a fruit merchant and their family re-laoced to the golden city of Mumbai in the 1940‘s. Yusuf Khan started working as a canteen supplier in Pune, where he was spotted by the yesteryear leading actress Devika Rani. He was then given the on-screen name Dilip Kumar and he debuted with Jwar Bhata (1944) which went unnoticed. The first successful film of this actor was Jugnu (1947). In 1949, he co-starred with Raj Kapoor in the romantic melodrama film Andaz, which went to become very successful and announced his presence in Indian cinema. Throughout the 1950s he was one of the biggest stars of Bollywood along with his contemporaries Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand. He became known for playing tragic roles in hit films such as Deedar (1951), Amar (1954), Devdas (1955) and Madhumati (1958) which earned him the title of "Tragedy King".
After a brief period of box office flops in the mid 1960s, Dilip Kumar bounced back when he played a dual role of twins separated at birth in the film Ram Aur Shyam (1967) which was one of the biggest box office hits of the year. In the 1970‘s he acted in fewer film, many of his films failed to become successful and he taook a five year break from cinema. But he made a comeback in the multi-starrer Kranti in 1981 which became the biggest hit of that year. He began playing the patriarch in multiple successful films such as Shakti (1982), Vidhaata (1982), Mashaal (1984) and Karma (1986) and Saudagar (1991).
