Facebook, the world’s most popular social networking site turned nine today.

On Feb 4, back in 2004, Mark Zuckerberg started the site, then known as TheFacebook.com, when he was a sophomore (second year) at Harvard University. It is said that he shortened the name to Facebook on the suggestion of Napster founder Sean Parker. Zuckerberg launched the initial version of Facebook called Facemash in 2003 but was shut down by the college authorities because he got the information for the site by hacking into administration records.

Nine years later, it is the largest social networking site with over 1 billion users. It’s hard to imagine how a hobby project, a college network, took the world by storm and forever changed our lives. By March 2004 it spread to Stanford, Yale and Columbia. Then to other Ivy League schools, then all colleges, and then to everyone.

Here are a few of the key milestones of Facebook:

May 2012: Facebook became a publicly tradable company on May 18. On May 19, Zuckerberg tied the knot with long-time girlfriend Priscilla Chan.

Oct 2012: On Oct 4th, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the network had passed the 1 billion users mark.

January 2013: Facebook announced the launch of Graph Search. Users can search anything their Facebook friends have shared, including photos and posts.

Facebook has had a great run so far and we have a feeling they're just getting started.
