Raipur, September, 2014: Eureka Forbes, India’s market leader and pioneer in water purification for nearly 32 years, has initiated a nationwide mass awareness campaign to educate consumers about the impact of water contamination through first-of-its-kind Aquaguard Water Test Kits.
Contamination of drinking water has been identified as a critical public health issue by the World Health Organization (WHO), causing more than80% of all diseases. Turbid water during monsoons is especially common as it often enters old and porous pipelines, resulting in a surge in health related issues due to water contamination.Monitoring the bacteriological quality of drinking water is essential to control the presence of microorganisms that can cause severe health problems, the most common being gastrointestinal illness of diarrhea. Although gastrointestinal illness is usually non-life threatening in normal healthy adults, the risk of death increases among vulnerable groups such as infants, the elderly and immunosuppressed individuals. Contaminated water also causes illnesses such as cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis. Since most people do not clean their storage tanks frequently, it leads to the supply of filthy, contaminated water to households. However, while cleaning of storage tanks is equally important, it is also crucial to test the quality of water before consumption, especially during monsoons.
To understand the impact of water contamination and key issues with drinking water in India, Eureka Forbes and GFK had conducted a nationwide survey titled “Kya AapkaPaaniBeemar Hai” last year. The findings revealed some hard-hitting facts about water contamination being the biggest issue for more than 70% households in India. It also revealed that toxic chemicals like arsenic and lead and disease-causing bacteria are also contributing to the alarming increase in the water contamination.Keeping this mind, Eureka Forbes has designed this unique DIY (Do It Yourself) Aquaguard Water Test Kits, to allow people to test their water quality and apprehend its health quotient. Consumers can get a free demonstration by reaching out to a Eurochamp (Eureka Forbes’ salesperson specialist).
The Aquaguard Water Test Kits consist of five small cylindrical bottles, each consisting of a ‘bio pellet’, made of highly enriched microbial growth media, which helps detect contaminants in the water. The bottle should be filled with tap water to be tested and kept under ambient temperature of at least 35 degrees Celsius , away from direct sunlight(such as in a kitchen) for 24 hours. While clear or yellow water indicates it to be free of bacterial contaminants, change in the colour of water to black will signify the presence of contaminants indicating it to be unfit for consumption. If the colour changes to dark black, it could be contaminated with disease causing bacteria, such as HPC Bacteria, TC Bacteria, FC Bacteria or EC Bacteria.
Sharing his thoughts on the initiative, Mr. Marzin R. Shroff, CEO — Direct Sales & Senior Vice President — Marketing, Eureka Forbes Limited said, “Today, water contamination is the biggest and most persistent problem in India affecting thousands of lives, especially children. With water borne diseases like diarrhea, typhoid on the rise, it is becoming very vital to educate people about the precautionary measures to prevent such deadly diseases. Our campaign is a drive to safeguard health of Indians by educating them and their kids about their drinking water quality and the right purification technologies. We believe reaching out to them can make a huge difference in creating a healthier nation and invariably fighting water contamination problems.”
