Slum Soccer was established as a Non Governmental Public Charitable Trust Organization governed by the Public Trust Act of the state of Maharashtra in 2001.What started as simple weekend sessions coaching individuals today has developed into full fledged coaching camps that have had a positive impact on nearly 70,000 men, women and children in over 63 districts all around the country.
Individuals who often shy away from mainstream society like the homeless, recovering drug addicts and alcoholics, children of commercial sex workers, slum dwelling kids and youth, street paper vendors etc are the ones who are most positively affected by this sport and the skills they learn via Slum Soccer. Supplemented with counselling both psychological and nutrition and regular health checkups ,this initiative aims at improving both physical and mental health and well being.
It doesn’t simply stop at soccer but goes on with imparting essential life skills using different media like art, drama and music. Prof Vijay Barse continues to strive forward and promises to leave no stone unturned in seeking out new avenues to be able to make a positive effect.
