You need to keep your head aligned with your spine and, if you are sleeping with your head raised on a bunch of pillows, it is out of line with your back. The result can be back pain.

A serious source of low-back pain exists when someone develops a kidney disorder. Due to the fact that your kidneys are near your lower back, if you develop a kidney infection, kidney stones, or other kidney problems, you may suffer from low back pain. In such cases, it's typical to also have pains in the lower abdomen, and possibly when urinating as well. Kidney problems are a condition you need to have evaluated and treated by your doctor. Don't put it off, because this can be a serious situation. If your doctor suspects a kidney ailment, he can do testing to find out for sure. Such tests as an ultrasound or urinalysis might be all that he needs. Lower back pain by itself isn't usually a sign of kidney trouble, but if you have any suspicion that this might be the case, it's best to be safe and have it checked. Suffering from back pain is very distressing. In fact, it can make it extremely difficult to even rise out of bed each day. As they say, "knowledge is power", and if you can discover the root of your back pain, you can take the steps to prevent it returning in the future. Your first concern, naturally, is to successfully treat any pre-existing health problem that could be a causative factor in your back pain. If a health issue isn't the reason, then it's up to you to think about your lifestyle and what may be leading to your back pain.
