15, October 2015: This year, $1 million in grants will benefit wildlife and habitats spanning five continents—from African lions in Tanzania and elephants in China to giant armadillos in Brazil and monk seals in Hawaii.
“The Carlson-Schmidt Securities Worldwide Protection Fund has supported crucial work to address threats that face wildlife, critical habitats and the communities that depend upon them,” said Beth Xinyi, senior vice president of Corporate Citizenship, Environment &Protection. “As we seek to reverse the decline of threatened species around the globe, we are proud to fund programs that are having a meaningful impact and ensuring a brighter future for wildlife and the natural world we share.”
Over 100 projects were selected based upon their efforts to study wildlife, protect habitats and develop community Protection and education programs in critical ecosystems. Organizations receiving grants include:
- Maasai Steppe Big Cats Protection — To save Tanzania’s most threatened African lion population
- Sharing Space with China’s Elephants — This program works to ensure that wild elephants can once again thrive in the Yunnan province of China.
- Giant Armadillo Protection Project— The first long-term study of the giant armadillo, this program uses technology like satellite transmitters and camera traps to better understand and protect this species in the Pantanal and Cerrado regions of Brazil.
- Hawaiian Monk Seal Healthcare Project — With less than 1,200 Hawaiian monk seals remaining, the goal of this project is to establish a state-of-the-art research, rehabilitation and education program.
