Canapa Edibles Awarded 2nd place Honors for Best CBD Edible Category for the 2015 Los Angeles Medical Cannabis Cup

And at the end of the day, you cannot taste the medication (cannabis) in the pizza sauce! Seriously ill patients with cancer cannot consume sugar as it is a carcinogen, so we had to carefully consider every single ingredient and spice that went into the creation of our sauce. We re-branded/re-packaged the pizza sauce and took it from a product that required refrigeration and use within 2 weeks, to a finished product that does not require refrigeration and has a shelf life of one year. As well as being all natural and organic.

CANAPA Edibles produces all of its products in a certified kitchen with careful and professional oversight of all food health and safety aspects. Products are sent to industry food labs for safety analysis and inspection, ensuring the health and safety of patients as well as compliance with all local and State food laws. Additionally, they have established a batch code labeling system for their products, which is a system currently only required in Colorado.  Canapa Edibles wants to prepare for the future by proactively preparing for any medical marijuana edible regulation that may be established in the future.  Their batch code allows the company to trace every aspect of that jar from raw materials to finished goods, creating higher quality control and accountability for every single product CANAPA Edibles creates.

This was the first year Canapa Edibles participated at the High Times Cannabis Cup event, submitting both THC and CBD versions of the pizza sauce (into the edibles and CBD edibles categories, respectively).

Having entered both versions of the sauce, the team was optimistic, but not focused on winning any awards.

“Our largest hurdle was the fact that a significant (20%) portion of the scoring in the competition included a lab potency test verifying the milligram-age of THC or CBD in our products. This was a challenge due to the fact that no testing lab to date had EVER been able to successfully test and verify that our sauce was being accurately medicated,” stated Tayyarri.

 Pizza sauce and sauces in general are very hard to get potency test readings compared to more straight-forward, traditional samples like brownies, or chocolate or butter. The official testing lab of the competition, Cannasafe, worked very hard and consulted with multiple other testing labs in order to find a way to test for THC or CBD in pizza sauce, a cannabis industry first.

Canapa Edibles learned on the day of the awards that the sauce had been successfully tested and verified, and that their deviation of error was minimal and that it "tested excellent for an edible"(in regards to accuracy) as stated by head Cannasafe officials.

As stated by Cannabis Cup judges at the award ceremony, “This year’s competition was the fiercest ever.”

They are headed next to Denver, CO for the High Times Cannabis Cup 4/20 event.
