Every man needs at least one amazing formal or semi-formal outfit in their closet. Unlike almost any other purchase though, all men should take just a little bit of time to understand some of the basics of buying a business suit and how to best find the materials, cuts, styles, designs, and colors that will go best with their own specific body and personality.

Many suits come with a few basic parts that will require measuring. Men that have not recently been fitted for a suit or have changed in sizes recently should re-measure themselves prior to purchasing one of these outfits. This includes the jacket, dress shirt, and the pants. When making these measurements, it is usually best to work with a partner while the man being fitted is standing completely relaxed. Measurements should then be taken of the neck, arms, shoulders, chest, waist, inseam and hips.

When the correct size has been found, it is time to start looking at styles and designs. Two and three button suits have conventionally been the most common for many years and a large majority of business suits will come in one of these two options. Men that have a longer torso may wish to go with three button suits that sit up higher on the midsection and chest whereas men that are rather shorter or heavier may look better in two button variations.

Modern fit and slim fit options have once again become common in recent years due to their classic appeal and their general sharp image. These two cuts will be much smaller around the midsection and have a tighter fit around the chest. It is important to get the measurements correct for these outfits though so as to ensure that they will not be uncomfortable while wearing them.

There are very few colors and materials that will not work in a professional setting, however most men will need at least one basic black suit in their closet. Not only is black one of the easiest colors to mix and match with, it also has a slimming effect. Man that are larger that would like to appear to be slimmer may wish to go for blacks or vertical stripes on their suit. Other common color options are darker grays, blues, and browns.

For those that will be wearing their suit week after week, it is often best to come up with a good collection of jackets and pants, and then change up the appearance of the outfit with the accessories that are worn with them. A brightly colored shirt, handkerchiefs, cufflinks, new ties, and different shoes can then be changed up throughout each week in order for men to look great without breaking their budget.
