Innovation must be the way of life’, says the India most eminent & popular scientist Dr Raghunath Mashelkar. Born in a village called Mashel in Goa, Dr. Mashelkar had a tough journey since his childhood. He was a child without father from the age of six and due to the less qualification his mother faced lot of difficulties in livelihood. The hard work of a mother was an inspiration for Dr. Mashelkar which encouraged him complete his studies with a countless challenges in life. Hailing from a not so privileged family background Dr. Mashelkar faced lot of difficulties while completing his education. He was seen barefoot until the age of 12, and two meals a day was a great challenge for them. Dr. Mashelkar studied at the Central Railway station in the dark night waiting for last train to be left at 10.00am, after which the platform use to be quiet & without any disturbance where he could study. Through such adverse conditions, he determinedly studied under streetlights in Girgaon Choupatti in Mumbai and secured to earn many scholarships. He did BE in Chemical Engineering from University Institute of Chemical Technology better known as UDCT, Bombay.

Dr. Mashelkar gained lots of notable achievements facing diverse hitches in life. He is only the third Indian Engineer to have been elected as Fellow of Royal Society (FRS), London in the twentieth century. He is also the only scientist so far to have won the JRD Tata Corporate Leadership Award (1998) and the Star of Asia Award (2005) at the hands of George Bush Sr., the former president of USA.

As a CISR director, Dr Raghunath made many changes and laid emphasis on national progress through the field of research and innovation. He was responsible for establishing many branches of CSIR, thus giving a number of researchers the opportunity to receive training under his mentorship. His work towards the IPR has been crucial as he was responsible for creating a nationwide movement on Intellectual Property Rights. He emphasised the need for patents and the preservation of knowledge through his alliance with noted Indian academicians, researchers and the corporate sector.
