There was a time when uploaded photos were processed automatically and then Facebook suggested tags based on facial recognition technology. It made tagging your wild Friday escapades or your sprawling family reunion/wedding/graduation a breeze to upload.

Facebook automatically indexed every face in a group feature and then ran a facial recognition script on your friends’ profile to find a match. Once found, the result was displayed back to you as a suggestion. With a few clicks, you’re done tagging your entire clan or entire high school batch. Easy breezy, right?

This facial recognition technology however raised some privacy concerns. So intense was the backlash that Facebook pulled the feature back to make some “technical improvements”. Well, now it’s back. Facial recognition and automatic photo tagging are once again implemented for U.S.-based Facebook users.

For those of you who actually wants the feature back, then let this be a “good news” article for you and let’s leave it at that. For those who think facial recognition and auto-tagging is too invasive, too creepy, or simply too much, then read on.

While auto-tagging is singularly implemented throughout the United States, there is actually an option to turn off this feature. The only problem is that it’s kind of buried and hard to see or navigate to. Don’t fret, we’re here to give you a step by step guide on how to disable auto tagging.

How to Remove Your Profile From Auto Tagging:

1. Go to facebook.com/settings or click the gear icon in the upper right corner of your Facebook page.
2. Go to the Timeline and Tagging tab
3. On the third group of options, titled “How can I manage tags people add and tagging suggestions?” edit the option which says “Who sees tag suggestions when photos that look like you are uploaded?”
4. Change it to “No One”

After those steps, Facebook won’t index your profile anymore which means you won’t be automatically suggested to be tagged in your friends’ photos. Additionally, for more information about this feature, you can go to the official blog post from Facebook about photo tag suggestions.

Another Facebook feature hits the mainstream. As Facebook continues to innovate, it’s becoming an even more exciting place to be. Does innovation equate to lack of privacy? What are your thoughts about this matter? We’d love to hear from you so feel free to comment below.
