Orlando, FL — April 9, 2015 — According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, two-thirds of American adults have reported that they exercise only by walking for about 90 minutes per week. This is sad news for health experts, since it shows that many individuals don’t engage in adequate exercise.
The Arthritis Foundation has provided facts about how walking can help with knee osteoarthritis. According to the study published by the Arthritis Care & Research journal, taking 6,000 steps every day can significantly help reduce the risk of functional limitations for knee osteoarthritis patients. These limitations refer to mobility problems, such as walking short distances or climbing the stairs.
“Many experts around the world consider regular exercise and a healthy diet to be among the most powerful preventive measures for a wide variety of medical conditions, including arthritis,” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.
Daniel K. White is an assistant professor and physical therapist at the Boston University College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. White and his team recently examined data from the Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study. This particular study used knee osteoarthritis patients (or high risk individuals) as its subjects. These participants were instructed to wear an activity monitor for one week to see how much they moved.
The team found that, after two years of measuring their activity level, 4 to 8 percent had suffered from functional limitations. To summarize, they stated that the more steps subjects took, the greater the additional benefits would be for these patients. However, they also added that some steps, regardless of how few, are better than none.
Researchers also found that taking 5,000 steps every day could help as well. White added that individuals who walked over 5,000 steps were 50 percent less likely to suffer from functional limitations than those who walked less than 5,000 steps.
There can be some life-changing effects when people start becoming active after having a sedentary lifestyle. For people to be motivated to move, they need to make highly achievable goals on a daily basis. For instance, they can take 6,000 steps and still aim for 10,000 steps.
Becoming physically active cannot be done overnight, and individuals should do it gradually to avoid injuries. Some experts also suggest that natural supplements may help to reduce pain for those who find it difficult to get moving. Curcumin supplements are a popular choice for many arthritis sufferers (http://www.amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
