Alzheimer‘s Association Partners With The Private Duty Homecare Association To Address Alzheimer‘s Care And Safety At Home

Washington, D.C.— October 29, 2011 -- November is National Alzheimer‘s Disease Awareness Month and also marks a time to rally around the nearly 15 million family caregivers that provide billions of unpaid hours of care to those with Alzheimer‘s and other dementias.* As the population of families that care for people with Alzheimer‘s increases, more information is needed about care, respite, and safety. The Private Duty Homecare Association (PDHCA) is proud to announce the Alzheimer‘s Association® National Capital Area Chapter (www.alz.org/nca) as the next partner in the PDHCA "Help Choose Home" educational webinar series. PDHCA and the Alzheimer‘s Association National Capital Area Chapter will come together on November 15, 2011 to present "Alzheimer‘s Care and Safety at Home." "With glaring statistics regarding stress among unpaid family caregivers of Alzheimer‘s sufferers—more than 60 percent of family caregivers report high levels of stress because of the prolonged duration of caregiving and 33 percent report symptoms of depression—Alzheimer‘s awareness and support for families is of utmost importance," said Jane Priest, Chief Program Officer of the Alzheimer‘s Association National Capital Area Chapter. "We‘re pleased to partner with the Private Duty Homecare Association to help educate families on options to age at home when dealing with an Alzheimer's diagnosis."

Alzheimer‘s is the sixth-leading cause of death in the country and the only cause of death among the top 10 in the United States that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed.* PDHCA‘s discussion, co-presented by Jane Priest, Chief Program Officer of the Alzheimer‘s Association National Capital Area Chapter, will be an invaluable presentation about the additional care that is needed for both the caregiver and the care recipient. The interactive webinar will cover the warning signs of someone possibly suffering from Alzheimer's disease, how to approach caregiving for someone with Alzheimer's disease, the telltale signs that indicate caregiver stress, and respite care options with in-home care.
