Aluminum is the commonest metal on earth's crust and is silver coloured white in color. Aluminum is well-known and widely known for its low density and ability to resist corrosion. The corrosion resistance is due to a slim layer of aluminium oxide that forms when the metal is put in contact with the air. It is non-magnetic and non-sparking, and does not melt in alcohol. Aluminum is a good thermal and electric conductor.

Aluminium is extracted from the principal ore, bauxite, which is mined using open cut techniques. The bauxite is purified utilizing the Bayer process.

The wide use of aluminum is because of the flexibility of the metal. Its lightness, good thermal and electric conductivity, malleability, tensile strength, high reflectivity etc, makes it suitable for use in building residences to aircrafts, electrical wires to nutrition storage containers, and lots of others. Many commercial and army aircraft are made mainly of aluminium. The metal makes the linings of grilles, wheels, air-conditioners, automated transmissions, engine blocks and radiators. The aircraft engines, skins, landing gear, frames and interiors also , are made of aluminum.

Being highly malleable, aluminium is simply fabricated into sheets of various levels of thickness starting from aluminium foils, sheets, shapes, rods, tubes and wires. It doesn't loose strength in intense temperatures, and is easily reusable. It's also got properties of being highly reflective and is utilized in reflectors in stoves, infrared dryers, lighting gear and wave guides. It is utilized as an insulating material in buildings due to its property of reflecting warmth and light.

Aluminum, in the form of a fine powder, is employed in a range of products from paints, rocket fuels, explosives, and chemical reductant. Most of the modern mirrors are made using a thin reflective coating of aluminum on the back surface of the sheet of float glass. Telescope mirrors are also made from aluminium coating for good reflecting ability.

Friedrich Wohler was first to isolate the metal in 1827. But the metal has been long used since the traditional Roman times. Though it hadn't been isolated till the 19th century, the compounds of aluminium had been used by Romans as dyeing mordants and astringents for dressing wounds.

Aluminum doesn't have any known function in the living cells and also known to provide harmful effects in higher concentrations. It can get deposited in bone and central nerve network and competes with calcium for assimilation. In particularly high doses , it can cause neurotoxicity and is known to alter the working of the blood-brain barrier. Those who are sensitive to aluminium may experience dermatitis, digestive disorders, bone agony, muscle weakness, anemia, impaired iron assimilation, episodes, growth retardation in youngsters, spinal afflictions, and so on. Antiperspirants containing aluminum may increase the chance of breast cancer and aluminium has been implicated as an element in Alzheimer's illness although no definitive proof has been cited.
