An APD officer is the target of an Internal Affairs investigation for allegedly using his badge to try to get a date with a woman who works at Knockouts. Sgt. Daniel Carr pulled over Jeffery Manning last June. The traffic stop led to a DWI arrest and probation.

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) — But Manning’s girlfriend says it was a setup — that Carr followed him from Knockouts and pulled him over because of his interest in having a relationship with her. In an affidavit filed in the case, she said he would come in to Knockouts where she worked and flirt with her. She also said he would approach her when she was leaving work.

She testified that a year ago, not long after they met, she and her boyfriend left Knockouts in separate vehicles and that’s when she noticed Carr following them. She says they had just gotten onto I-40 when Carr “immediately initiated a traffic stop” of her boyfriend’s vehicle.

After he was arrested, she says Carr began calling and texting her, asking her on dates and offering to follow her home from work in case she had been drinking. She says she went along with it for a while, because he hinted that if he were to not show up for court, her boyfriend’s case would get dismissed.

In court documents dealing with the DWI case, Carr doesn’t deny knowing the stripper, but denies her and her boyfriend’s claims that he abused his badge. A judge in the DWI case ordered the state to turn over Carr’s cellphone records with the woman.

The IA investigation will determine what happened and whether there was police misconduct. Carr supervises a group of field officers downtown. APD wouldn’t comment about Carr’s Internal Affairs investigation, but said he’s currently on regular duty.

A trial date was scheduled for the DWI case Wednesday, but the DA’s office asked for a continuance, saying Carr was on leave. KRQE News 13 made a public records request on Carr’s file and learned this isn’t his first issue. He has several letters of reprimand for conduct, missed court and three accidents. He’s also been flagged by APD’s Early Warning System.
