56% Indian Men Believe ‘People Demanding Dowry Should Be Fired From Their Jobs’ - A Shaadi.com Survey

 

Survey reveals the “Ideal Punishment” for Demanding Dowry in India

 

Mumbai, December 5, 2012: Shaadi.com, the world’s largest matrimonial portal conducted a survey to understand what today’s Indian youth considered as the ‘Ideal Punishment’ for demanding dowry. Interestingly, 53% of Indians believed that the people who demand dowry should be forced to pay twice the demanded amount to the bride’s family instead. While most women agreed to that, 56% of Indian men firmly believe that men who demand dowry should be fired from their job and 44% of men believed that dowry-seekers should be forced to pay 5 times their current income tax to the government.

 

While the dowry act clearly directs instant remand for husbands who harass their wives for dowry, 52% of Indian women believe that ‘Women misuse the dowry Law’. Dowry is taken because dowry is given, and dowry is given because dowry is taken. This infinite loop of blame has been going on for decades. When we asked the Indian youth for their views on who truly deserves to be punished, 62% of Indian women agreed that a girl’s family should be punished for encouraging the practice of dowry, while 38% men believed that the boy’s parents deserve a harsher punishment.

 

So who does the Indian youth hold responsible for the existence of the dowry system in India? Quite surprisingly, 52% of Indian men feel that the Groom’s parents are more responsible for dowry in India, while 48% of Indian women hold the ‘Brides parents more responsible for encouraging the dowry system in Indian marriages.

 

Commenting on the survey, Gourav Rakshit, Chief Operating Officer, Shaadi.com said, “We strongly condemn this society menace and have consistently run campaigns to help create awareness on this issue.
